Konglish and random pictures: the special ‘Icheon’ edition

1

While in town for the Icheon Pig Museum, we came across enough ‘special English’ in one night to make an entire post of Konglish. All of these were taken in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do, within a couple blocks from the bus terminal or our hotel for the evening:

Found inside the hotel room – apparently it cost 500 won and had the sticker for use by people 19 years or older. I’ll let you guess what this is used for…

I could see a few cases in which the words “center of wedding” might appear in More >

Konglish – because it’s just hilarious sometimes

English – they’re doing it wrong. When it’s hilarious, it’s Konglish (or a number of region-specific terms)…

From the facemask:

Especially the skin activation ingredient abundantly

make the neat and clear skin. “하루수분 (Daily Moisturizing)”

removes effectively waste matter from the skin pores.

Also, it gives your skin moist and silky.

Moist and silky WHAT?!

Seen at a Lotteria in the Gangnam area – it’s like they took lyrics from the Western world, spliced them up, and tried to make something out of it.

Korea makes Konglish like I make blog posts

I call a work of art the sweat of this ethic. Any work that is not the sweat of an ethic ,any work not stemming from an exertion of the soul’s will more strenuous than any physical labor, any work that is too visible (since the personal ethic and the works of art it engenders cannot be seen by those who live without an ethic, or who are content to follow a standardized code), any work that persuades too readily ,will be but a decorative fantasy.

Interview: a professional Konglish writer

3

Author’s note: A few days ago, I had the privilege to meet Mu Jil Seo (무질서), a professional Korean writer, of sorts. The interview is paraphrased, not quoted, as the interview happened without a tape recorder.

Chris In South Korea: It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mu Jil Seo!

Mu Jil Seo: A pleasure to meet you as well. [Settles into chair, picks up his cup of coffee]

CISK: So, I’m told you’re a professional Konglish writer here in Korea?

MJS: It’s a weird title, but yes, I specialize in Konglish.

CISK: And yet, speaking to you now, you sound as though you have perfect English skills…?
